Free Laundry Service Offered at Whitsett Elementary
Access to clean clothes improves student attendance, grades and participation, according to a study.

NASHVILLE, TN β A South Nashville elementary school is part of a program which will provide free access to washers and dryers for students and their families.
The Whirlpool-sponsored program provided laundry equipment to John B. Whitsett Elementary, as well as East Nashville's Gra-Mar Middle School and Inglewood Elementary. The schools are part of an expansion of the company's Care Counts project which was piloted in two school districts last year.
Studies show that one in five children have limited access to laundry and clean clothes, which is a hindrance to their confidence, attendance, academic performance and participation in extracurricular activities.

According to The Tennessean, Whirlpool said more than 90 percent of the students who participated in the pilot program improved attendance. Teachers said children with access to the washers and dryers improved grades and extracurricular participation.
The equipment is expected to be in place Sept. 9.
