Retired Firefighter's Barn, Car Burn In Antioch

A faulty fire hydrant caused problems for firefighters battling a blaze in Antioch early Monday.

ANTIOCH, TN — Nashville fire crews struggled with a hydrant as a car and barn belonging to a retired firefighter burned early Monday in Antioch.

A passing motorist saw flames coming from the barn on Mt. View Road around 3:30 Monday morning and called 911. (For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Middle Tennessee Patch morning newsletter.)

The homeowner, retired firefighter Tommy Potts, told WSMV he woke up and saw that the fire in the barn, which contained his woodworking shop, was "fully involved" with flames 10 to 15 feet high. A nearby car was also engulfed.

The nearest hydrant was giving crews difficulties, so water had to be shuttled more than a half-mile. It took nearly an hour for the fire to be contained.

The cause remains under investigation.
