Roving Bands of Glass-Smashing Car Burglars May Be Targeting Gym-Going Brentwood Women

Smash-and-grab auto break-ins are just the first step in an ID theft and bank fraud scheme, Brentwood police say.

BRENTWOOD, TN — Brentwood Police say "traveling gangs" of smash-and-grab car break-in artists and bank fraudsters appear to be targeting women on their way to exercise.

Investigators believe the thieves are reconnoitering in parking lots at places like the YMCA and Williamson County Athletic Complex and that they wait for women to leave their vehicles unattended. The suspects then use a screwdriver or a similar prying tool to break the car's window and steal the purse within. The suspects then take identification and checkbooks to use in a bank fraud scheme that spans several states.

Anyone with information is asked to call Brentwood Police at 615-371-0160.
