Nissan Recalls 134,000 Vehicles Due to Leaking Brake-Fluid Fire Risk

Bad seals on some late-model Maximas and Muranos may cause an electrical fire.

FRANKLIN, TN — Nissan is recalling more than 134,000 vehicles due to the danger that a bad seal in the brake system could cause an electrical fire.

The recall covers 2015 to 2017 Murano SUVs and 2016 to 2017 Maximas with intelligent cruise control. Also included are some 2015 and 2016 Murano hybrids.

A bad seal in the brake line could cause fluid to leak onto a circuit board, sparking an electrical fire. If there is a leak, the cars anti-lock brake warning light will stay illuminated for more than 10 seconds after the car is started. Owners who get such an indication should park their car outside and away from structures or anything flammable and contact Nissan Roadside Assistance for immediate service.

The company received the report of a fire in a Maxima in early June, and then, after investigation, learned of several other fires, prompting the recall. Owners will be sent a recall letter immediately and then a second letter once parts are available. The brake actuator pump will be replaced for free at the dealership.

The vast majority of the 134,000 cars covered by the recall were sold in the United States or Canada.
