Here are the top stories today in the Franklin area:

  1. A transgender Navy veteran is suing Vanderbilt University for discrimination. The lawsuit alleges that longtime employee Olivia Hill was subject to vulgar abuse and ridicule after her gender affirmation surgery. Notably, Hill is the first Vanderbilt employee to complete a gender transition while employed at the university. Said Hill, "This is not about me anymore, it's about every single woman who's been wronged." (WSMV Nashville)
  2. Gov. Bill Lee will extend an executive order that lets families opt their children out of school mask mandates to prevent the spread of COVID-19, despite federal court rulings that have blocked the policy in three counties. Lee told reporters that the order, which was set to expire on Oct. 5, will be extended by 30 days. To date, federal judges have blocked the order from being implemented in Knox, Shelby, and Williamson counties. Separately, the Nashville district attorney has pledged not to prosecute teachers or school officials for enforcing their mask requirements without the governor's new required leniency.
