Belmont Neighborhood Tests 'Pop-Up' Roundabout
Neighbors rave about the traffic-calming effects of the temporary traffic circle.

NASHVILLE, TN — Speeds are slowing at a popular cut-through between 12South and Belmont Boulevard thanks to an as-yet-temporary roundabout.
For one week, the Nashville Civic Design Center has erected a temporary traffic circle at the intersection of 15th Avenue and Elmwood Avenue using paint and cones as a stand-in for a more permanent placement. Area residents told WTVF it's already made a difference at the intersection, which is frequently sped through.
"When we were putting tape down people were flying by and that's with a cop here," the Civic Design Center's assistant director Ron Yearwood told the station. "But as soon as we put the paint in immediately, because it's visual you see something, you slow down."

WTVF reports that the traffic circle could become permanent as Metro Public Works replaces water lines. Since the road will have to be repaved anyway, the circle may be added as part of that project.
