Car Flies Off I-40, Slams Into Bellevue Home

The driver of a Mazda was taken to Vanderbilt after running off the interstate, tearing through yards and hitting a house.

BELLEVUE, TN — After flying off Interstate 40, tearing through several backyards and a shed and slamming into a house, the driver of a Mazda was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center Friday morning and Metro Police's fatal accident response team was called to the scene on Colt Drive in Bellevue.

Just after 7 a.m. Friday, a Mazda left the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40 near mile marker 197 for an unknown reason and after careening through several yards and destroying a shed, hit the back of a house owned by an 81-year-old woman in the 200 block of Colt Drive, some 400 feet from the interstate.

The car's engine was dislodged from the car and the vehicle itself was resting in its roof. The homeowner was not hurt and police say she had just left the bedroom moments before the Mazda hit it.
