Johnson City names new planning director (johnsoncitypress.com) — Johnson City has hired former development coordinator Steve Neilson as its new planning director, returning him to a key role guiding local growth starting Sept. 21. City officials praise his deep planning experience and long-standing ties to Johnson City, while Neilson says he's eager to help manage the community's current development boom.
   

2. Harris's career night lifts 'Toppers past Morristown West (johnsoncitypress.com) — Science Hill's Kiantai Harris delivered a record-setting 367 rushing yards and four touchdowns in Johnson City to power the Hilltoppers past Morristown West despite multiple turnovers and penalties. The win keeps Science Hill unbeaten and sets up another home game at Kermit Tipton Stadium next Friday night against Tennessee High.

Bluff City police searching for missing man (wcyb.com) — Bluff City police are asking for help finding Brian Hall, whose car was last detected Aug. 22 near North Roan Street and West Springbrook Drive in Johnson City. Family and his employer are worried after he missed work and calls, and anyone who spots his silver 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is urged to contact police immediately.

Bristol, TN police officer suspended after domestic assault charge (wjhl.com) — A Bristol, Tennessee police officer has been suspended after Johnson City authorities charged him with domestic assault connected to interactions that allegedly unfolded in the city. Court documents describe a series of encounters involving the officer, the victim, and Sullivan County deputies, with Johnson City Police now handling the criminal case while Bristol conducts an internal review.

From a wonder to a tragedy (irontontribune.com) — Johnson City briefly appears in a haunting regional story about "Murderous Mary," the circus elephant whose 1916 killing in Erwin followed a deadly incident and led officials here to warn the show it wasn't welcome.
