Just after 3 a.m. this morning, Knoxville Police Department officers responded to a crash on the ramp from I-40 West to Weisgarber Road. Based on the severity of the crash, Crash Reconstruction investigators were requested to the scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the following is believed to have occurred. A Dodge pickup was traveling on the exit ramp when it left the roadway and struck a guardrail. The three occupants exited the vehicle and were standing next to it when a Chevrolet pickup struck the Dodge and its three occupants. All three were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevy was removed from the truck and transported to an area hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life threatening.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation at this time. The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
