Fiery Crash Ends Driver's 12-Mile Wrong-Way Run On I-24

A Mt. Juliet man was arrested after driving from Nashville to Rutherford County on the wrong side of I-24.

LA VERGNE, TN — La Vergne Police arrested a Mt. Juliet man after he drove 12 miles from Nashville into Rutherford County on the wrong side of the interstate early Tuesday morning. The pursuit, such as it was, ended when the man's car, which was driving on the rims, caught fire.

Shortly after 3 a.m. the driver, identified as Spencer Rhodes of Mt. Juliet, began driving east on Interstate 24 West after side-swiping another car at the Interstate 40 split near downtown Nashville. By the time he got to Waldron Road in La Vergne, his car was throwing sparks by driving on the rims and had caught fire.

Rhodes is charged with DUI, reckless driving and felony reckless endangerment.

The westbound lanes of I-24 were closed for about two hours as police investigated.
