La Vergne, Smyrna Firefighters Deploying to Smoky Mountains Fire
Rutherford County firefighters are joining the battle against the blaze in Gatlinburg.

LA VERGNE, TN — La Vergne and Smyrna firefighters will be deploying to Sevier County to assist in the battle against the blaze that prompted the evacuation of thousands and destroyed hundreds of buildings in the popular resort towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.
A La Vergne assistant chief left Monday for Pigeon Forge, along with Murfreesboro Fire personnel; now, Smyrna and La Vergne will send more aid.
The fire, which started as a 10-acre blaze on Chimney Top mountain, spread rapidly to 500 acres Monday and is now raging near downtown Gatlinburg, where hundreds of buildings have been destroyed. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency put out a statewide call for mutual aid as Monday's rain did little to quell the blaze.
