La Vergne, Smyrna Water Departments Call for Voluntary Restrictions

With the drought worsening, northern Rutherford County utilities are asking for voluntary cutbacks in water usage.

SMYRNA, TN — As Rutherford County faces a severe drought, the La Vergne and Smyrna water departments are implementing voluntary water restrictions in an effort to mitigate the effects.

Both departments — along with the county's Consolidated Utility District and the Murfreesboro Water & Sewer Department — hope that voluntary rollbacks in water usage will prevent the implementation of mandatory restrictions.

Under a voluntary restriction, citizens are asked to generally conserve water, particularly in the following ways, classed as non-essential uses:

  • Washing sidewalks, driveways, parking areas, tennis courts, patios or other exterior paved areas, except by the City for the public safety.
  • Filling or refilling a swimming pool.
  • Noncommercial washing of privately owned motor vehicles, trailers and boats.
  • Any use of water from a fire hydrant except for fighting fires, or use by the Town.
  • Watering of lawns, gardens, landscaped areas, trees, shrubs or other plants.
  • Use of water for dust control or compaction during construction.

A chance of rain rolls into the area Friday and Saturday with another chance of showers early next week.
