MTSU Poll: Donald Trump Lead Safe in Tennessee
Poll taken after the first debate shows a 12-point lead for Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton
MURFREESBORO, TN — Real-estate developer and reality television star Donald Trump leads former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by 12 points among likely voters in Tennessee, according to the latest MTSU Poll.
Given the four highest-profile candidates as options, respondents were asked who they would vote for if the election were held today:
- Trump (Republican) — 48 percent
- Clinton (Democrat) — 36 percent
- Gary Johnson (Libertarian Party) — 5 percent
- Jill Stein (Green Party) — 1 percent
- Undecided/leaning Trump — 2 percent
- Undecided/leaning Clinton — 2 percent
The poll was conducted between Sept. 28 and Oct. 2, afer the first presidential debate. Registered voters in Tennessee were surveyed via random telephone calls to both landline and mobile numbers. The poll has a four-point margin of error.

The poll captured responses from 600 registered votes, of whom 472, or 79 percent, were identified as likely voters based on a series of questions about past voting behavior and voting intention.
When the question was re-posed asking voters to choose between Trump and Clinton only, 50 percent of likely voters went for Trump and 40 percent for Clinton.
