📰 News we're reading

1. BD116174 - Memphis Local, Sports, Business & Food News (dailymemphian.com) — If you sell lab supplies, the City of Memphis wants to hear from you soon. The Purchasing Agent is accepting sealed bids for laboratory supplies for the Public Works Division until noon on September 9, 2026, at City Hall on North Main. Full RFQ details and contact information are posted on the city's website for interested vendors.

2. TVA's rate change for data centers 'a very good thing,' Memphis mayor says (wreg.com) — Memphis residents could see a fairer utility burden after TVA approved a new rate class that makes data centers pay more for electricity than households. Mayor Paul Young backs both the TVA change and a proposed temporary moratorium on new data centers to secure stronger community benefits, including directing 25% of related tax revenue into nearby neighborhoods for blight reduction and other improvements.

3. Shelby County Commission passes resolution requiring approval to use county funds for litigation against MSCS oversight board (localmemphis.com) — Shelby County commissioners in Memphis have voted to require their approval before any county funds are used to support lawsuits challenging the state-created Educational Oversight Board for Memphis-Shelby County Schools. The move comes after earlier funding for legal action against Tennessee's takeover law and could shape how local leaders respond to future state oversight decisions affecting the district's finances and operations.

4. Watch: Downed tree crushes new Ford Bronco at U of M (wreg.com subscription) — A powerful weekend storm at the University of Memphis left a brand-new Ford Bronco crushed under a fallen tree, though thankfully no one was inside. The same bow echo system brought destructive 80 mph winds across the Memphis area, ranking as one of MLGW's most damaging storms and underscoring how vulnerable local infrastructure and vehicles were to sudden tree and wind damage.

5. Power outages linger for thousands 2 days after storm (actionnews5.com) — Thousands of Memphis and Shelby County residents are still without power three nights after storms with 70-plus mph winds knocked down trees and lines, and MLGW warns full restoration may not come until Thursday evening. Crews and contractors are working across neighborhoods, some MSCS schools remain closed, and officials are urging everyone to stay far away from downed power lines for safety.
