📰 News we're reading

1. Starlink Discount Attracts 2,000 Users in Memphis Amid Data Center Complaints (pcmag.com) — Memphis-area residents can now get Starlink internet at roughly half price, with about 2,000 customers in greater Memphis and Southaven signing up since late June. The discount follows neighborhood complaints and legal challenges over noise and pollution from SpaceX's expanding local data center, which the company says it will modify by replacing mobile gas turbines with permitted permanent units by 2027.

2. Restaurant Roundup: September 4 (actionnews5.com) — Shelby County health inspectors have released new restaurant and venue scores, including several Memphis spots like Luula Restaurant & Grill, Great Hunter Crab, Cavalry Episcopal Church, Walt & Ricky's, and 2 Star Jr. Two locations were ordered to remain closed until serious issues, including lack of hot water and broken cooling equipment, are fixed, so diners may want to double-check scores before heading out.

3. You Walk Shaded Trails Through The Old-Growth Tennessee Forest Loggers Never Reached, Right Inside Memphis (takingthekids.com) — Memphis residents can explore a rare 126-acre old-growth forest right inside Overton Park, with free admission, shaded trails, and easy parking. The Old Forest State Natural Area offers flat dirt and paved paths, rich birdlife and wildflowers, nearby playgrounds and picnic spots, and quick access to the zoo, golf, and Midtown restaurants, making it an easy, low-cost weekend outing.

4. David Lynn Reeves, 68 (nemiss.news) — Family and friends are remembering David Lynn Reeves, who was born in Memphis, graduated from Kingsbury High School, and worked for years in construction across the Memphis area. The 68-year-old died August 29 in Ripley and will be cremated, with no services planned, and his loved ones are invited to share memories and condolences through Ripley Funeral Home.

5. West Memphis Utilities: No rate increase because of Google (wreg.com) — West Memphis Utilities is reassuring customers that Google's massive new data center won't raise their utility rates, since the company is paying for its own infrastructure and power needs. Across the river, MLGW's CEO likewise says Memphis and Shelby County customers haven't seen electric rate hikes tied to local data centers, including those run by SpaceXAI and others.
