Mid-South Grapples with Record Snowstorm: Schools Closed, Power Outages Reported

Senatobia, MS — A historic snowstorm is sweeping across the Mid-South, bringing heavy snowfall, icy roads, and widespread disruptions. Local authorities have issued travel advisories, and several school districts have canceled classes as conditions worsen. Residents are urged to remain indoors as the storm continues to impact the region.

According to the National Weather Service, some areas in northern Mississippi and western Tennessee have already recorded more than 8 inches of snow, with additional accumulation expected through the evening. Roads remain hazardous, and officials are advising drivers to avoid unnecessary travel.

“Please use extreme caution when traveling, especially in rural areas, as trees are down and continue to fall,” the Mississippi Highway Patrol said, adding that troopers are working to clear affected highways.

Local power companies are reporting intermittent outages as heavy snow and ice accumulate on power lines. Crews have been mobilized to restore service as quickly as possible, while residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions.

In a statement posted on social media, Entergy Mississippi said, “Our army of workers—including line workers, damage assessors, vegetation crews, engineers, and support personnel—are responding across our service area.”

Officials also recommend keeping a supply of food, water, and essential medications on hand and checking on neighbors, particularly elderly residents who may be at higher risk during extreme winter weather.
