North Mississippi Remains in Emergency Mode as Winter Storm 2026 Disrupts Daily Life

PANOLA COUNTY, MS — Dangerous winter weather has brought much of Panola County to a standstill as Winter Storm 2026 continues to disrupt daily life across the Mid-South.

The powerful winter system is expected to impact a wide swath of the region with heavy snow, dangerous freezing rain, sleet, and life-threatening wind chills. Forecasters warn that significant snow and ice accumulations — stretching from Texas to the Carolinas — could lead to prolonged power outages, extensive tree damage, and extremely hazardous or impassable travel conditions.

Local officials in Panola County say conditions have continued to deteriorate. In a statement posted to Facebook on January 24, the Panola County Sheriff’s Office urged residents to stay off the roads.

"Folks...road conditions are deteriorating. Please, please, please...stay at home, stay warm, stay dry...if at all possible," the department said. "Our deputies are out riding the roads monitoring the situation."

Municipal offices have followed suit. Sardis City Hall announced it would remain closed on Tuesday, January 27, citing ongoing impacts from the storm.

"Due to the winder weather impact, City Hall will remain closed," the statement read. "Please continue to shelter in place and remain safe."

School operations have also been affected. North Panola School District officials announced that all district schools and offices will remain closed through Friday due to winter weather conditions.

Residents across the county report worsening conditions and extended power outages, particularly in hard-hit neighborhoods. One Sardis resident, Mike Miller, described widespread damage and isolation in his area near Skatetasia.

"We live on Camille Street behind Skatetasia and lost power at 4:23 a.m. Sunday," Miller said. "Trees and power lines are down everywhere. Some folks can't even get out of their driveways. Parts of the road are blocked, and sections of Highway 315 were blocked the last time I checked."

Miller added that while the utility provider has acknowledged the outages, no restoration timeline has been provided.

"They've said they're aware of power outages in the area, but there's no estimated time of restoration and no clue when someone will actually show up," he said.

Another resident, JanIce Morgan, echoed those concerns, saying many residents remain trapped by debris and downed lines.

"We are also blocked in, and probably will be for a week or so," Morgan said.

UPDATE: In Sardis’ Greenhill community, residents continue to face prolonged power outages as dangerous winter conditions persist. Natasha Jackson, who was without electricity for more than a day when this story was first reported, provided an update earlier Tuesday.

“We’re now 53 hours without power,” Jackson said.

Residents remain blocked in as ice and snow leave vehicles stranded, with dangerous conditions preventing many from traveling or even exiting their driveways across the area.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol is proactively asking for cooperation on the highways. "Please use extreme caution as you travel in rural areas, trees are down and are continuing to fall. Troopers are doing their best to help clear the highways," the patrol said.

Local officials continue to urge residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and monitor official updates as emergency crews work to assess damage and restore services. With additional ice and bitter cold expected, authorities warn that conditions could worsen before they improve.
