Memphis land bank CEO fired over misuse of organization's credit card (commercialappeal.com) — Memphis residents are learning that the CEO of the city-created Memphis Metropolitan Land Bank Authority was fired after allegedly using the organization's credit card for personal expenses. The board's unanimous decision, backed by the City of Memphis, comes amid other recent local cases involving questionable public credit card use, raising fresh concerns about oversight of taxpayer-supported entities.

Property assessor warns that empty office buildings in Downtown Memphis could cost taxpayers (actionnews5.com) — Downtown Memphis' high office vacancy rate is worrying the Shelby County property assessor, who warns that persistent empty buildings could eventually shift more of the property tax burden onto homeowners. At a press conference outside the Memphis Riverline Hotel, he outlined a new report on the county tax base and previewed a November summit to explore strategies for redevelopment, revenue, and spending control.
