1. 10-year-old killed after running into the road after a soccer ball, Murfreesboro police say (tennessean.com subscription) — Murfreesboro police are investigating a tragic crash in which a 10-year-old boy was struck and killed on Middle Tennessee Boulevard while retrieving a soccer ball near Saint Karas Coptic Orthodox Church. Officials say this is the city’s first fatal crash involving a child in 2026, and the Fatal Accident Crash Team is reviewing what happened as no charges have been filed yet.
   

2. Middle Tennessee substitute removed after reportedly putting student in classroom closet. Here's what the district says happened (wsmv.com) — Rutherford County Schools has barred a substitute teacher from working again after officials say the person placed a Whitworth-Buchanan Middle School student and his desk inside a classroom closet in Murfreesboro. Administrators removed the substitute immediately after the report and stressed that this kind of response to behavior issues is not tolerated in district schools.
   

3. New Kroger opens by Smyrna High, 2nd in town, 9th in Rutherford County (dnj.com) — A new Kroger has opened next to Smyrna High School, expanding the chain’s Rutherford County footprint while Murfreesboro continues to host six busy locations serving local shoppers. Residents now have even more grocery options competing with Publix, Aldi, and Trader Joe’s in Murfreesboro, with added jobs, nearby restaurant and bank development, and guidance on avoiding school traffic when visiting the new store.
   

4. Rutherford County K9 retires after taking 11K illegal drugs off the street (wkrn.com) — A Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office K9 based in Murfreesboro has retired after eight years helping seize more than 11,000 pounds of illegal drugs and locating 23 firearms. K9 Wiley will now live permanently with his longtime handler, wrapping up a career local deputies say significantly improved community safety.
   

5. Bryan Terry (change.org) — Eastern Murfreesboro residents are represented in the state House by Dr. Bryan Terry, a Republican physician who has served District 48 since 2015. He’s the chamber’s only Native American member and balances legislative work with teaching, small-business ownership, and health policy leadership roles.
