Avian Flu Found At Second Tennessee Poultry Farm

Chickens at a farm in Giles County were euthanized after a second avian flu outbreak.

NASHVILLE, TN — A highly pathogenic strain of avian flu has been detected at a second Middle Tennessee poultry farm, state officials announced Thursday.

An outbreak of the H7 HPAI strain of bird flu was confirmed at a Giles County farm. The particular strain of flu is "highly pathogenic" to chickens, turkeys and ducks, with a mortality rate north of 90 percent. The H7 HPAI virus can infect humans, though it is uncommon and most likely to occur in people with direct contact with infected birds.

The chickens at the farm in Giles County with euthanized and buried and the farm is under quarantine while other poultry facilities within a six-mile radius are being monitored. The outbreak in Giles County is not connected to the outbreak in Lincoln County announced Sunday.
