Beavers drew harsh criticism and frequent protests from LGBTQ groups and others, including major corporations, for her push to define marriage as between one man and one man in contravention of the Supreme Court's decision in the Obergefell case and for her advocacy of the so-called "bathroom bill."

"Over the past several weeks, it has become increasingly clear that conservatives in Tennessee are looking for bold leadership that will not shrink from standing up and speaking up on the key issues facing our state," Beavers said.

Beavers has a reputation for deleting Facebook comments that are critical of her and for blocking critics on Twitter. After being repeatedly confronted by protesters during the last legislative session, she hired private security. She said she would have a campaign Twitter account which would remain open.
