John Jorgenson’s versatile guitar playing and inventive arrangements injected fresh energy into country music in the 1980s and ’90s, both with the Desert Rose Band and as a sought-after session player. Raised in Redlands, California, by musical parents, Jorgenson was a quick study: he had learned piano, clarinet, ukulele, and guitar before he was a teenager and later began playing professionally at Disneyland. After becoming involved with southern California’s rockabilly and country scene, he formed the Desert Rose Band with former Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers member Chris Hillman. With Jorgenson providing musical arrangements, the group released five albums between 1987 and 1993, scoring seven Top Ten hits, including the #1 songs “He’s Back and I’m Blue” and “I Still Believe in You.” In 1990, Jorgenson formed the Hellecasters with guitarists Jerry Donahue and Will Ray, who together released three acclaimed albums that centered a dazzling triple lead guitar attack. As a session musician, he provided guitar on albums by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Carlene Carter, Kenny Chesney, John Prine, Bonnie Raitt, and many others. In addition to his session work, Jorgenson served as musical director for the television programs Hot Country Nights and ABC’s Delta. He won the Academy of Country Music’s Guitarist of the Year award in 1990, 1991, and 1992. In 1994, Jorgenson joined Elton John’s band and accompanied the British icon live and on album for six years. Currently, he performs with his “gypsy jazz” group, the John Jorgenson Quintet. The Museum’s Jon Freeman will host this program, which will be illustrated with photos, film, and recordings. After the program, Jorgenson will sign commemorative Hatch Show Print posters. Matt Combs is a fiddler, multi-instrumentalist, and producer known for his work in American roots music, orchestral composition, and film and television scoring. He has played on recordings by Dan Auerbach, Johnny Cash, Wynonna Judd, Kacey Musgraves, and Sturgill Simpson. Combs is the 2012 Grand Master Fiddler Champion, a Grammy-nominated member of the John Hartford String Band, and the co-author of John Hartford’s Mammoth Collection of Fiddle Tunes. American Football Indie Rock Before attaining global recognition as a defining pillar of the “Midwest Emo” sub-genre, American Football was a humble University of Illinois-based indie rock band led by Mike Kinsella (founding Cap’n Jazz drummer-turned- vocalist-and-guitarist) along with Steve Holmes (guitar) and Steve Lamos (drums / trumpet). They were influenced at the time by artists including Steve Reich, Tortoise, and The Sea and Cake.
Together, American Football would play no more than a dozen sparsely attended shows before going their separate ways. With college graduation and some variation of adulthood looming, the band’s parting gift would be shared in the form of a self-titled album, released in September of 1999 via the locally founded Polyvinyl Record Co. What would transpire over the ensuing fifteen years, however, is something made of rock and roll legend – where word of mouth meets message boards, and mixtapes, burned CDs, and early file sharing platforms allowed for the lore of an otherwise unknown band, with a nondescript house on their lone album cover, to grow into something much larger.
In 2014, answering the call from a growing legion of dedicated fans, American Football would reunite to international acclaim. With the addition of bassist/multi-instrumentalist and cousin Nate Kinsella, the quartet has since released two additional (and equally beloved) self-titled records in 2016 and 2019, while steering a natural evolution in their evergreen sound towards post-rock, post-punk, and more experimental influences. They’ve collaborated with admired peers and fans alike, including Paramore’s Hayley Williams, Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell, and Ethel Cain, among others. The band has been touted among the most important artists of their class by the likes of Alternative Press, The FADER, GQ, The Guardian, NME, NPR Music, KEXP, Vulture, Rolling Stone, and elsewhere.
Hailed as the “most influential album in the genre” by Pitchfork, American Football spent the last two years honoring its 25th anniversary of their self-titled debut – colloquially known as “LP1,” by embarking on a sold out world tour. In the process, they shared a remastered edition of the landmark record, compiled an LP1 covers album by artists of mutual inspiration, put out their first live album, and released a companion concert film of its recording.
Having recently ventured into parts of the globe for the first time, the band has also found an overwhelming embrace among a new generation of fans. Many of these fans have never been to the American Midwest, yet have all felt that same emotional connection to its vast geography and rich&nbsp;creative soil. Eighteenth Louise Scruggs Memorial Forum Honoring Trey Fanjoy

Poppy Metal Progression and subversion coincide. By subverting the ideals and constructs of society, rules, and religion, progress transpires.&nbsp; Poppy leverages evolution as a weapon for transformation. By doing so, she asserts herself as an anti-hero for a gender-less and genre-less world in need of a god-dess. Her quiet rise from incalculable phenomenon viewed over half-a-billion times on YouTube into unassuming paragon of high culture, high fashion, and high art extolled by everyone from HIGHSNOBIETY to Flaunt fuels her metamorphosis as “Poppy Version X.” Embodying “alternative” in the truest sense of the word, she bleeds the boundaries between pop, progressive, and electronic underpinned by unpredictable time signatures shifts and heavy edge on her third full-length and debut for Sumerian Records, I Disagree. &nbsp; “In terms of doing what I wanted to in every element from start-to-finish, this feels like my first album,” she explains. “The narrative is really about destroying the things that try to destroy you.” &nbsp; Throughout 2019, Poppy carefully constructed a sonic framework to do so. On the heels of her sold-out Am I a Girl? Tour, she sequestered herself in Los Angeles alongside trusted longtime collaborators Zakk Cervini, Chris Greatti, and Titanic Sinclair. They conjured the full powers of a creative spirit first summoned on “X” in 2018. Under the influence of everything from Madonna, Air, and Gary Numan to Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson, she took the reins and built the album in an unfiltered and unfettered creative ecosystem of her own design, expanding the sonic palette with an arsenal of analog synths and sonic flourishes. &nbsp; “I worked with Zakk, Chris, and Titanic throughout the entire process,” she recalls. “I didn’t let anybody else hear it before it was done, and I didn’t take any outside remarks. In the past, I’d go in and make a song in a day. That was fun, but we really spent days or even weeks on these new songs to make them the best they could be. That’s a lost art in music we got to explore. There’s a lot of life that gets lived during the creation of an album over ten months that gives you a different experience and perspective. ‘X’ sparked the idea of making experimental music with no rules among my friends. That was the goal. Creating Poppy Version X.” &nbsp; A siren wail and whispered plea to “Bury me six feet deep” initially heralded the record on “Concrete,” dipping in and out of fits of fret-burning solos and stained glass-smashing crooning. Meanwhile, the single “BLOODMONEY” slips from a heavenly harmony into a hellishly barked commandment, “Beg for forgiveness from Jesus to Christ” above an industrial stomp and glitchy buzzing. In many ways, the title track “I Disagree” crystallizes a mission statement cast in crimson-soaked verses and a beautifully bludgeoning refrain as she chants, “We’ll be safe and sound when it all burns down.”
The music ultimately manifests her vision. &nbsp; “Sometimes when I write music about one thing, it ends up being about something else and coming true,” she explains. “It’s life imitating art—or art imitating life. ‘I Disagree’ is about wanting to light everything on fire and enjoying it. You’re not thinking about rebuilding anything yet, just thinking about destruction. It feels good.”

She levied this position to leave an indelible imprint on art at large, beginning with her 2017 full-length debut, Poppy.Computer, and followed by the sold-out Poppy Computer Tour. 2018’s Am I Girl? accelerated her rise as she once again packed houses on the subsequent headline tour as well. Along the way, she stood out as the rare talent who could collaborate with Diplo, accompany Bring Me The Horizon on an arena tour, perform at WWE: NXT, and incite conversation at New York, Paris, and Milan Fashion Week appearances. Not to mention, she received praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, New York Magazine, and Alternative Press and appeared&nbsp; on the covers of Revolver, NME, Kerrang!, and many more.
