Horse Camp for Grown Ups Offers Knowledge for All

Session One includes veterinary, nutrition, and natural wellness

Safe Harbor Equine & Livestock Sanctuary (SHELS) will present its first session of Horse Camp for Grown Ups on Saturday, March 3, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Equine Health and Wellness is the session’s focus. Horse Camp for Grown Ups is designed for current horse owners as well as those who are interested in purchasing or adopting a horse in the future.

Elise Jones, DVM, will be the main presenter, with guests from Tribute Equine Nutrition and SHELS also offering knowledge. The session will cover nutrition, diagnostics, illnesses, treating injuries, conditions that can be treated by a horse owner, and when to call a veterinarian. Developmental life stages, evaluating lameness, determining if an issue is pain or behavioral, wound care, bacterial and fungal infections, and how to identify common toxicity problems that affect horses in Tennessee will also be covered. Enrollment in the session is $75 and includes lunch and a s’mores campfire gathering. A limited number of $125 spots are available for participants who wish to bring their horses and receive personalized veterinary and nutritional consultations as part of their camp experience.

Horse Camp for Grown Ups is a series of four Saturday clinics scheduled in 2018. SHELS not only works to rehabilitate and rehome animals in need, but also to educate current and prospective horse owners about the many aspects of ownership and care. Additional sessions are scheduled for April 28, July, and September. Discounts are available for those who attend multiple sessions.
