Hot August Nights: Nashville Likely To Tie Weird Weather Record

National Weather Service: Temperature hasn't dipped below 70 since July 2

The low across the Midstate Friday night is forecast to be in the mid-70s.

Unless the meteorologists are well off-target, Nashville will tie a strange, 61-year-old record.

Starting July 3, the low temperature in Nashville has been 70 or warmer. To put it another way, for 40 hot days and unusually warm nights, the mercury has not dipped below room temperature. For more proof, see next month's electric bill.

Should Friday's low hit the forecast, the lows-above-70 streak will hit 41, matching a run made back in 1955. Weirdly enough, that year's hot-night streak also began July 3.

According to a review of record by NWS meteorologist Bobby Boyd, this is only the second verifiable time the streak has gone beyond 30 days.

"There was also 41 days back in 1872 that began on June 24th however the morning lows were taken around 3:30 am and didn't necessarily represent a true low temp in my opinion. There was also 36 days that began on June 15th in 1873 that I didn't include above for same reason," he wrote on Facebook.

Nashville should have no problem besting the bizarre record. Lows are expected in the 70s through next week.
