Man Charged With Firing Shots At Nashville PD Detective

John Douglas Smith, 21, is charged with attempted criminal homicide after he fired shots Wednesday afternoon toward a detective who was attempting to serve Smith with a Wilson County probation violation warrant.

Madison Precinct Detectives Dallas Caruth and Derek Moore went to Smith’s residence in the 1500 block of Meadow Bend Road and after seeing no one home began to drive away. They then passed a car associated with Smith and turned around. When they arrived at the home, all but one of the occupants of the vehicle had gone inside. As Detective Moore approached the front door, Detective Caruth walked around to the side of the house and saw Smith running through the backyard. Detective Caruth ordered Smith to stop. Smith turned and fired at least four times at Detective Caruth who slipped and fell as he tried to take cover. Smith fled on foot.

Detectives received information early this morning that Smith had returned to the Meadow Bend Road home. Members of the police department’s Special Response Team, who are SWAT trained and respond to high risk arrest situations, were called to respond. Officers made repeated announcements over a public address system for Smith to surrender. He exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident.

During an interview, he admitted to knowing that the detectives were police officers and firing several times toward Caruth.
