Man Kidnapped, Threatened Woman On First — And Last — Date: Police

A 30-year-old man threatened to kill a woman and kidnapped her during their first - and last - date in December.

NASHVILLE, TN — After a night of drinking and dancing, a man kidnapped and threatened to kill a woman in December, while the two were on a first date, according to Metro Nashville police.

Lebanon's Craig DeWayne Mangrum, 30, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated kidnapping, theft and interfering with an emergency call. (For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Middle Tennessee Patch morning newsletter.)

In early December, Mangrum met the victim at the Cheddar's restaurant in Mt. Juliet and the two then proceeded to downtown Nashville, drinking at several bars. Around 2:30 a.m., they began walking to their car near Play Dance Bar on Church Street.

As Mangrum was quite drunk, the victim asked if she could drive and, according to her, this angered him, leading to an argument, though ultimately he turned over the keys. When they neared the Second Avenue entrance ramp to Interstate 40, Mangrum once again became angry and threatened to kill her, according to the affidavit.

The woman pulled over and got out of the car and was attempting to call police from her cell phone when Mangrum chased her down and forced her back inside the car, she told investigators. He then allegedly took her phone, saying that he was on probation and that he was a convicted felon who owned a handgun. The woman said Mangru told her if she called police "she would never see her family again."

Mangrum than drove to his Lebanon home, where the victim was able to escape to a neighbor's, from where she called her father. The father told MNPD that he called local law enforcement, but they told him they were unable to do anything because the incident began in Davidson County, so he drove his daughter to the Old Hickory Boulevard exit in Hermitage and called Metro.

Mangrum is being held on a $35,000 bond. He has two previous convictions for domestic assault, plus convictions for vandalism, aggravated assault and violating an order of protection.
