Meet “Breeds of the World” at Safe Harbor’s Open House Saturday, April 22

Horse rescue's annual free fundraiser kicks off with dedication of outdoor arena

Event opens with ribbon cutting of the Rogers Group Outdoor Arena

Cottontown, TN – Safe Harbor Equine & Livestock Sanctuary (SHELS) will host a “Breeds of the World” Open House at its training center in Cottontown on Saturday, April 22 from noon until 7:30 p.m. Admission to the event is free, with a la carte activities available throughout the afternoon. Multiple breeds of horses including Arabian, Belgian, Dutch Warmblood, Gypsy Vanner, Paso Fino, Percheron, Quarter Horse, Standardbred, Thoroughbred, Welsh Pony, and more will be showcased at the event; many of them rescue horses and some available for adoption.

To kick-off the event, Safe Harbor and The Rogers Group will host a ribbon cutting on The Rogers Group Outdoor Arena at the training center. The outdoor arena is 100 x 200 ft. and will be used for children’s camps, therapy sessions, fundraiser obstacle challenges, training adoptable horses, and more. The Rogers Group donated more than $7,000 of materials for the arena. In addition, the local Lowes store #2618 assisted with a donation of 75 bags of concrete and a discount on lumber; a $500 value.

Among the available a la carte activities throughout the day are buggy rides in a show buggy formerly owned by Country legend George Jones with a Standardbred and a petting zoo with goats, pigs, chickens, cow, mini donkey, and mini horse. At the conclusion of the event, SHELS will offer a memorial lantern ceremony. Lanterns are available for purchase, and names of horses (or other pets) will be read during the ceremony.

Safe Harbor Equine & Livestock Sanctuary is a middle-Tennessee based, volunteer-staffed animal rescue organization. Currently, SHELS has more than two dozen foster farms throughout middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, with primary operations in Sumner County. The organization is in the process of becoming a GFAS Accredited Sanctuary, is registered with A Home for Every Horse, and has been recognized by the ASPCA as the national model for equine fostering.
