Middle Tennessee Braces For First Snow of the Year

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Thursday night, with a slight chance of more snow coming Friday.

NASHVILLE, TN — Much of the northern tier of Middle Tennessee is under a Winter Weather Advisory from noon Thursday until midnight Friday, with as much as an inch of snow expected. There's a slight chance of another round of snow Friday.

The National Weather Service office in Old Hickory forecasts temperatures dropping quickly once snow begins to fall Thursday afternoon and predicts travel impacts during the Thursday afternoon rush hour. As much as two inches could fall on the Cumberland Plateau, with a half-inch to an inch across the rest of the Midstate, mostly on grassy areas and rooftops.

Forecasters says the snow should begin in the Nashville area between noon and 3 p.m., as the storm moves from northwest to southeast.

The advisory area includes Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford counties along with much of the northern half of Middle Tennessee; essentially the catchment of the advisory is counties north and northeast of a line from Dickson to Altamont.

Another system moves into the south Friday, but currently NWS forecasters believe it will stay well south of the Nashville area, giving more of a chance of snow to the southern tier of counties and those east of Nashville. Nevertheless, given the uncertainty of the track of that storm, forecasters have maintained a slight chance of snow in the forecast.
