Nashville Hiker Dies On Popular Great Smoky Mountains Trail

A 47-year-old Nashville man died while hiking the Alum Cave Trail, Great Smoky Mountains National Park officials said.

GATLINBURG, TN — Great Smoky Mountains National Park rangers confirmed a hiker from Nashville died on a popular trail Saturday.

Phillip Basset Davenport, 47, was hiking down Mt. LeConte via the Alum Cave Trail from the LeConte Lodge, where he'd stayed with a group of friends the night before. Around 10 a.m., three miles from the trailhead, Davenport passed out, apparently in cardiac arrest.

Bystanders began CPR until medics arrived on-scene, but were unsuccessful.

Davenport died around 11:15 a.m.
