Nashville Man Charged After Firing Shots Outside His Residence

John Taylor, 68, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault for firing shots Tuesday morning outside his Old Franklin Road residence as officers were attempting to locate a man, not Taylor, wanted for an outstanding aggravated assault warrant who was also reportedly suicidal.

Officers Kurt Lewton, Bryson Wilkins, and Alex Dibernardo arrived at the residence around 1:30 a.m. after learning that the wanted person, Derrick Swanson, 41, might be at the residence. They took cover behind a trailer and made announcements of their presence and for Swanson to come outside. After a brief amount of time, Taylor emerged from his house and fired shots from a 22 caliber pistol. As Taylor continued to walk toward the officers with the gun pointed in their direction, Officer Lewton fired one round. Taylor, who was not struck, retreated to his front porch where he put the gun down and surrendered without further incident.

Taylor confirmed that Swanson used to live at the residence. Swanson is still being sought in a domestic assault case in which he allegedly struck the victim in the head and strangled her. Taylor is free on $50,000 bond.
