The preliminary investigation shows that the tractor trailer, driven by Rustam Abdullayev, 23, was traveling south on Old Hickory Boulevard when he slowed to a stop in preparation of making a U-turn. Abdullayev reported that after checking for approaching vehicles, he activated his hazard lights and began making the U-turn. The tractor was perpendicular in the roadway when a southbound Nissan Rogue, driven by Sage, struck the side of the trailer at the rear axles. After the collision, the Nissan Rogue became engulfed in flames. Sage died at the scene. Abdullayev, of Springboro, Ohio, was not injured.
It appears that Abdullayev, who showed no signs of impairment, was in the process of making a proper U-turn when the collision occurred. The Tennessee Highway Patrol also responded and conducted an inspection of the tractor trailer and driver logs.

The preliminary contributing factor to this fatal crash appears to be excessive speed and inattentiveness on the part of Sage.
