Pedestrian Struck and Killed Thursday on I-40 Identified

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The pedestrian struck and killed Thursday evening on I-40 West near the Stewarts Ferry Pike exit is identified as Stephen Alexander Mercaldo, 29, of Lilburn, Georgia.

The preliminary investigation shows that Mercaldo was attempting to cross the interstate when he was struck by the driver of a Ford Expedition, James Myers, 23. Myers did not stop/stay at the scene. Mercaldo was then struck by other vehicles.

Myers later arrived at the Madison Precinct where he asked to speak to officers regarding the crash. He reported that prior to the collision, a car in front of him swerved suddenly to avoid striking the pedestrian, but that he was unable to avoid the collision. He said he drove to the next exit, parked his vehicle at a gas station on Donelson Pike, and called a friend to give him a ride. Fatal crash investigators will consult the District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be placed against Myers, who showed no signs of impairment.
