Second Presidential Debate Draws Lower Ratings in Nashville

Squared off against NFL football, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump pulled in more than 80,000 fewer viewers than in the first debate.

NASHVILLE, TN — Sunday night's second debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump attracted 80,000 fewer viewers in the Nashville area than the first go-round.

Mark Binda, programming and research director for CBS affiliate WTVF, when combining overnight ratings from ABC, CBS, Fox, PBS, CNN, CNBC, CSPAN, Fox News and MSNBC, the debate scored a 39 rating and a 51 share. That means, on average, 39 percent of homes were watching the debate and 51 percent of homes watching TV had Clinton and Trump tuned in. The figure excludes people watching on other stations — such as Spanish-language stations Univision or Telemundo — or via streaming services.

NBC was broadcasting Sunday night's NFL game between the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants.

Those combined figures translate into 394,500 homes tuned into the debate in the Nashville market, which stretches from southern Kentucky nearly to the Alabama border.

The first debate scored a 47 rating and 63 share for 475,000 viewers. Binda said football was a factor in the ratings, as locally, WSMV drew an 11 rating and 16 share for the game.
