Self-Defense Claim Under Investigation In Wednesday Night's Fatal Shooting Of Cleveland Shaw Jr.

The suspect says Shaw fired on him first.

The man suspected of firing the shots that killed Cleveland Shaw Jr., 29, on Clarksville Pike late Wednesday night came to police headquarters this afternoon with his attorneys, consented to an interview, and maintained that he fired on Shaw in self-defense after shots were fired at him first.

Shaw was driving a Polaris Slingshot on the Clarksville Pike bridge over the Cumberland River shortly before midnight when an apparent shootout occurred involving the Slingshot and a car. Two guns were recovered from the driver seat of the Slingshot.

An 18-year-old man in the passenger seat of the Slingshot was wounded. His injuries are not life threatening.

No charges have been placed at present against the 22-year-old man who admits to firing at the Slingshot. He is cooperating with Homicide Unit detectives as the investigation continues.
