Tennessee Schools Are 10th Worst In America, Study Says

A new study puts Tennessee near the bottom of school quality and safety rankings.

A new study puts Tennessee's schools near the bottom nationally in quality and student safety.

Personal finance website WalletHub used 21 metrics to measure quality and safety, ranking Tennessee 42nd overall, or 10th worst among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Massachusetts finished with a total quality/safety score of 78.16. Second-place New Jersey had a 66.92, and third-place New Hampshire and Wisconsin had scores of 64.25. Tennessee's total score was 40.58, besting only Oregon, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Mississippi, D.C., West Virginia, New Mexico and Louisiana.

Tennessee was ranked 35th in quality, but its overall score was hurt by its ranking of falling to 49th in safety, according to WalletHub. Only Arkansas and Louisiana were considered less safe.
