Tennessee Senate Passes Porn Resolution

The joint resolution, brought by Republican Sen. Mae Beavers, condemns pornography as a public health crisis.

NASHVILLE, TN — Without discussion, the Tennessee State Senate unanimously passed a resolution Monday condemning pornography as a public health crisis that leads to declining marriage rates and eating disorders.

The non-binding resolution, sponsored by Mt. Juliet Republican Sen. Mae Beavers, acknowledges the need for "education, prevention, research, and policy change" to address what it calls an "epidemic."

The resolution, which now heads to the desk of Gov. Bill Haslam, says children are being exposed to "what used to be referred to as hardcore pornography" at earlier ages, leading to low self-esteems, eating disorders, an inability to form meaningful relationships, skewing of the view of the role and value of women by both girls and boys, "emotional, mental and medical illnesses, shaping deviant sexual arousal, ... brain development and functioning, problematic or harmful sexual behaviors, and addiction."
