Tips To Build Literacy

Building literacy skills

Have you met the Characters of Character yet? Your children will love them, so friendly, so engaging and so impactful! Hi, my name is Joni and I'm the President and Founder of Characters of Character NFP. I formed our nonprofit in 2007 after I piloted the characters in an elementary school and they won a National Promising Practice Award! I spent five years on the Reading Team, was a Classroom Teaching Assistant and taught preschool. I've taken these experiences and used them in our books series, Come Learn With Me. These are some tips I'd like to share because they are what works and what we used to introduce literacy to children.

  • Take a picture walk
  • Point out the letters
  • Talk about the animal
  • Talk about the trait
  • Have your child tell a story with the character
  • Have a conversation with your child about the character, the trait or if they only see the animal, that's a great place to start
  • * Encourage drawing and encourage writing and encourage the alphabet included in each book, too. Learn more about the individual characters on our website and Characters of Character NFP, We think you'll be delighted!
  • Introducing your child to books at an early age is beneficial. As they develop reading skills, encourage them to pick books they like, find a topic of interest to them, encourage them and watch them soar like an eagle! I found so much joy in watching a child discover they could read, then write and before you knew it they were drawing pictures and creating their very own picture books. These are simple ways to help a child learn to love reading, writing and learning.
