(wjle.com) ā Smithvilleās police chief is urging the mayor and aldermen to boost officer pay in the upcoming 2026ā27 city budget so the department can better compete with nearby agencies and keep experienced staff. Heās proposing raising starting pay from $18.46 to $24.01 an hour, adjusting the pay scale, and increasing the annual uniform allowance to better cover real costs.

Moon, a longtime third grade math and science teacher, was surprised with the honor at school, while Smithville Elementaryās Christina Merriman and three other DeKalb teachers were recognized with school-level Teacher of the Year awards.
