Arlington: Back-In Angle Parking In Downtown Designed To Improve Safety

Free parking options for Downtown residents, shoppers and visitors includes reverse or "back-in" angle parking.

Back-in angle parking provides drivers with better vision of pedestrians, bicycles, cars and trucks as they exit a parking space and enter moving traffic.

When drivers leave the parking space, they pull forward into the street instead of backing into it, allowing them to see oncoming traffic easier. This can be particularly important during rush hour and following community events.

Back-in angle parking works similar to parallel parking.

1. Signal a right turn to warn other drivers.

2. Pull past the parking spot and stop.

3. Reverse into the parking spot.

Parking lines are angled against the direction of traffic indicating that the driver must back into the spot. These spaces are also marked by signs that provide step-by-step directions on how to pull in.

Drivers can find back-in angle parking spaces along sections of Abram Street as well as on Center and Mesquite Streets around 101 Center and the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library.

Parallel parking and pull-in parking are other types of free public parking available throughout Downtown.
