Fall Things to Do Near Aurora, TX: Pumpkin Patch, Corn Maze and Longhorn Hayrides

Looking for something to do around Aurora this fall? The town is small, one flashing light and under 2,000 people, but there’s more here than you’d think.

Start at Aurora Cemetery, one of the oldest in Wise County, where a Texas Historical Commission marker tells the story of the 1897 airship that locals say crashed on Judge Proctor’s place. It’s a strange, genuinely Texan piece of history and it takes ten minutes to see.

Then spend the rest of the day at Ruby Creek Family Farm, 390 Oates Creek Rd. The Peterson family has worked this land since the 1930s, and they open the gates Fridays through Sundays every fall. One $15 ticket covers more than 20 attractions: the farm’s first walk-through corn maze, new this year, plus the hay maze, the corn pits, a two-story sand pile, human hamster wheels, a catch-and-release fishing pond, live music and the General Store. In The Barnyard you’ll meet Fergus the Highland cow and Leroy Brown the llama. The longhorn hayride is the only add-on, $3 a rider, and the kids hand-feed real Texas longhorns from a covered wagon.

The season runs through November 8. Hours are Friday 10 to 3, Saturday 10 to 7 and Sunday 11 to 6. Grandparents and veterans pay $12, kids 24 months and under are free, and parking never costs a thing. Pumpkins are priced separately in the patch, $3 to $15, and you pay when you pick.

Four weekends have a theme: this weekend is Local Hero Weekend, with free admission for current military, EMS, police, firefighters and nurses with valid ID. Teachers get in free October 16 to 18. Halloween weekend is October 30 to November 1, daytime and not scary, costumes welcome. Grandparents Weekend closes the season November 6 to 8.
