📰 News we're reading

• 1 million toad eggs released at Bastrop State Park to help native species make a comeback (kut.org) — More than 1 million Houston toad eggs were recently released at Bastrop State Park as part of a major effort to restore this endangered species after the devastating 2011 Bastrop County wildfire. Biologists are testing multiple release sites in Bastrop and nearby counties and inviting interested landowners, including those in Bastrop County, to partner in rebuilding suitable habitat.

• Judge Temporarily Reinstates Terminated Texas State Professor (texasscorecard.com) — A federal judge has temporarily ordered Texas State University to reinstate a philosophy professor fired over controversial remarks about the October 7 attacks in Israel, pending a full decision. The case could shape how Texas universities handle faculty speech, and Bastrop resident Stephen Lee currently chairs the Texas State University System board overseeing the institution.

• Suspected Texas killer is an illegal from Mexico accused in rash of 'extreme violence' against women (foxnews.com) — A 2018 killing in Bastrop County has been linked by investigators to a suspected serial attacker now jailed in Travis County, raising concerns about additional victims across Texas. Authorities say DNA and ballistic evidence connect that case with a 2024 Austin homicide and two later shootings.
