Cedar Park Man, 81, IDed As Glider Pilot Who Crashed

James Morris Carter sustained minor facial injuries after his aircraft lost altitude and slammed into a barbed wire fence, officials said.

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS — Texas Department of Public Safety officials on Tuesday identified the glider pilot injured in a weekend crash as an elderly Cedar Park man.

James Morris Carter, 81, sustained minor facial injures after his Schweizer SGS I-35 single-seat glider landed in a field near County Road 108 at around 3:45 p.m. and slammed into a barbed wire fence, according to reports. The aircraft is said to have come down after the pilot was unable to find a thermal, which is a pocket of upwardly moving warm air that helps propel light aircraft in gaining altitude.

Though slightly injured, Carter is said to have declined medical treatment by medics who responded to the scene.
