Victoria Celeste DeKay, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle just after 6 p.m. on Monday near the Park Street bridge, police said. Another occupant, a male in his late teens, was rushed to St. David's Round Rock Medical Center after sustaining serious injuries.

Cedar Park police didn't specify which of the two occupants was driving at the time of the accident. Another motorist told police the driver of the 2012 GMC Terrain drifted to the right after passing him before striking the roadway barrier.

CenTX.com reported the girl was a senior at Salado High School, according to Saladao ISD Superintendent Michael Novotny. The educator said the school district has made grief counselors available to students coping with DeKay's death. Pastors from local churches also are on hand to help students dealing with sorrow over their classmate's death.

"We just want to remember her as a wonderful young woman that, unfortunately, her life was cut too short. But we want to remember all the memories that our students and staff had spending time with her," Novotny said, as quoted by KWTX. The superintendent told the station he talked to Dekay's mother on Tuesday.

Austin police on Wednesday confirmed the identity of the dead student. Officials noted her death marked Austin’s 22nd fatal traffic crash of 2017. At this time in 2016, there were 18 fatal traffic crashes and 18 traffic fatalities.

Police continue to investigate the collision in trying to determine if other contributing factors led to the deadly accident. Those with information or who witnessed the wreck are urged to call Cedar Park Police Department Sgt. Scott Buchanan at (512) 260-4754.
