Cedar Park Teacher Arrested For Alleged Improper Relationship With Student [UPDATED]

James Edgeley, 31, had taught at Vista Ridge High School and may have other victims at Round Rock High School where he was previously hired.

CEDAR PARK, TX -- Police on Thursday arrested a man accused of having had an improper relationship with a Vista Ridge High School student.

Ian James Edgeley, 31, was retrieved from the Harris County Jail where he was housed following his arrest at the Houston Airport after arriving from a trip abroad, police said in a press advisory issued Friday. Once back home, he was booked into the Williamson County Jail with a second degree felony charge under a $35,000 bond.

The arrest was the culmination of an investigation among the Leander Independent School District and Cedar Park Police Department, spared when the suspect's wife contacted school officials in June to alert them of her suspicions that Edgeley was having an improper relationship with a student.

A subsequent search warrant yielded nude photos of the victim on Edgeley's computer and intimate conversations between the suspect and victim via Twitter. The victim was later interviewed by police.

Law enforcement officials said they believe Edgeley may have had other improper relationships while teaching at Leander ISD or during earlier stints at Round Rock High School.

"We have reason to believe that Mr. Edgeley may have had or may have attempted to have relationships with previous students either during his time as an LISD teacher or as a teacher and soccer coach during the 2014-2015 school year at Round Rock High School or during his tenure as a student teacher and substitute teacher during the 2013-2014 school year at RRHS," police said in their press advisory.

Responding to a request for information from Patch, Round Rock ISD spokesman Corey Ryan confirmed Edgeley served as a computer science teacher and assistant boys soccer coach during the 2014-15 school year at Round Rock High School. Additionally, he served as a full-fledged teacher and substitute during the 2013-14 school year at the same high school.

"He left the district after the 2015 year to continue teaching at a neighboring school district," Ryan wrote. He noted that Edgeley underwent a Texas Department of Public Safety background check per district policy, which the suspect passed.

Ryan added there are no reported cases of additional victims originating from the Round Rock ISD. However, in a letter to parents, Ryan passed on information related to the district's Anonymous Alerts program that allows students or parents to report any sensitive information to school officials -- also including bullying, cyberbullying, depression, dating violence, drug or alcohol use, threats made to the school, weapons on campus, and more.

As its name suggests, information conveyed through Anonymous Alerts can be passed on without the need to leave one's name. More information on the program is available by clicking here.

Ryan also noted the existence of another help line called Lighthouse Services, where parents or students can anonymously report issues in English or Spanish. The telephone numbers are: 1-800-398-1496 (English) and 1-800-216-1288 (Spanish).

For their part, Cedar Park police urge other potential victims to step forward and contact them. The Cedar Park Police Department phone number is (512) 260-4772.
