Know the Maximum on Extended Loads: Police
Extended loads may not extend more than four feet from the rear of the vehicle and three feet from the front.

CEDAR PARK-LEANDER, TX - Leander Police are reminding people to make sure they know the maximum extended load length and width for vehicles.
A load of any kind cannot project or extend more than four feet from the rear of the vehicle or more than three feet from the front of the vehicle, the police department wrote on social media.
“Just the other day I witnessed a fella in a four door passenger car carrying lumber that was sticking out of his passenger side window by a few feet. A passenger vehicle may not carry a load extending more than three inches beyond the left side line of its fenders or more than six inches beyond the right side line of its fenders,” the police wrote.

Some people mistakenly believe loads can extend past this maximum if it has a red flag on it, but the red flagging is under a different section of the law and does not apply.
“The reasons for this law are obvious, as it is for the protection of other motorists on the roadway,” police wrote.
