Leander First Responders Extend Their Heroism Toward Animals Too
Recent rescue display in trying to save a fallen deer illustrates the full extension of the phrase 'protect and serve.'
LEANDER, TX -- Sometimes, to protect and serve extends to animals too.
Last week, Leander firefighters responded to the scene of an accident involving a moped and a fawn, Fox 7 reported. Once the human victim was stabilized, first responders on scene tended to the animal life.
"We had to do something,"Leander Fire Department Battalion Chief David Lincoln told the news station. "The fawn appeared to be dead at first glance, and as I looked a little bit more, the fawn was trying to breathe."
Officer Jerod Kostecka covered the animal with a blanket and called to the fire fighters who were still on the scene for help.
"I think one of the things I immediately saw was this fawn in the violent condition it was in, still trying to make it, it was everything we could do to just respect that life enough to try to assist in trying to get that life back,” Kostecka said.
Like other fire departments, LFD crews have specialized gear tailored to revive pets rescued from fires. But this would be the first time the equipment would be used on a deer.
Others helped in the rescue attempt, including Shannon Kraft, who with her husband volunteer with the animal rescue group All Things Wild. The fawn was handed over to her after the life-saving attempts.
Sadly, the fawn would later succumb to major internal injuries.
Anotole France once remarked: “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
On that lonely stretch of Leander road that day, where such valiant efforts were made to save the fallen animal, the full glow of the human soul was in vividly glorious display.
