LEANDER, TX — The Leander ISD board of trustees has scheduled a special meeting next week to formally hire Bruce Gearing as the new superintend of schools, officials said on Wednesday.

During the Thursday, Aug. 15, meeting, the board will take action on Gearing's new contract to start his job as superintendent on Sept. 3. Gearing emerged as the lone finalist for the role of Leander ISD superintendent on July 18. The timing of the contract signing is predicated by state law requiring districts wait 21 days after naming a finalist before they can finalize an employment contract, a district spokesman explained.

The special meeting will start at 6 p.m. at the Leander Extended Opportunity Center, 300 S. West St. A reception will follow the meeting. Gearing formerly served seven years as superintendent for Dipping Springs ISD. He replaces Dan Troxell, who departed on July 31 after a three-year stint as superintendent.
