Williamson County Sheriff Warns Residents Of Telephone Scam

One victim loaded up money in a prepaid card to satisfy and outstanding county debt, but the person calling was no deputy but a scammer.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TX — The sheriff's office is warning residents of a telephone scam involving a fraudulent caller using the Wilco Sheriff's Office main number that appears on the caller ID.

According to the report, the caller identifies himself as a deputy with the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, stating the person owes money to the county and a failure to pay would prompt the suspension of the scam victim's drivers license.

In the reported case, the victim actually complied while providing the number to a prepaid Walmart card with the supposedly owed amount loaded on it, sheriff's officials said. The scam usurps the sheriff's phone lines of (512) 943-1300 and (512) 943-1100.
