• Father of Jalen Hurts steps down as Channelview (TX) head football coach (on3.com subscription) — Channelview High School’s longtime head football coach Averion Hurts Sr., father of NFL quarterback Jalen Hurts, has stepped down after leading the Falcons since 2006. His tenure included guiding Jalen’s standout senior season and producing four winning campaigns, even as the team struggled recently. The program now faces a major transition after a 1-9 year and two decades under the same leader. 
• Rheba Nell Josey Downey (bluebonnetnews.com) — Channelview residents are mourning the passing of longtime former neighbor Rheba Nell Josey Downey, who later lived in Dayton and died at age 85. Loved for her warmth and friendliness at Downey’s Hobby Shop and Gerland’s Florist, she leaves behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Visitation and funeral services are set for Friday, May 15, in Dayton.
• Texas took their licenses. Now these immigrant truckers face lost livelihoods, sense of betrayal (click2houston.com) — A Houston-area trucker who posed with her pink semi in Channelview is among many immigrant drivers who lost their commercial licenses under Texas’ new crackdown on noncitizen CDLs. The policy, driven by federal and state Republican leaders, has sidelined thousands of legally present drivers, slashing family incomes and pushing some into lower-paying gig work. Advocates and affected families are now challenging the rules in courts and public protests.
