Brazoria County Deputy Injured in Crash with Possible Drunk Driver

Driver was allegedly running from Pearland Police when he broadsided sheriff's deputy.

PEARLAND, TX - A Brazoria County deputy was injured Wednesday afternoon when his patrol car was hit broadside by a suspected drunk driver who was fleeing from police.

The accident happened at about 2:35 p.m. at the intersection of Bailey Avenue and Veterans Drive.

According to deputies, Pearland police received a call from a motorist about a possible drunk driver.

The caller was following the vehicle along Broadway to Main Street.

An officer caught up to the vehicle on Main Street and tried to pull the car over, but the driver of the car refused to pull over.

Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jimmy Novack heard about the chase and went to the intersection to block traffic, and the pursued vehicle crashed into the deputy’s cruiser, and rolled several times before landing on the west side of the intersection, authorities said.

Police said Novack and the alleged drunk driver were taken to by EMS Memorial Hermann Hospital.

The extent of their injuries was not immediately released.
